Day 10 - full day in Venice Italy

I actually stayed right across the lagoon from Venice in Mestre. I grabbed a train across the water, 10 minutes (3 Euros round trip)

My first stop, which involved a meandering 30 minute walk, was the famous Rialto Bridge across the Grand Canal. There were hords of people taking photos.

I was able to find a couple of "mystery shops" (under cover business evaluations) in the fabulous, multi-level Fondaco dei Tedeschi Galleria shopping center. 5 floors of upscale clothing, jewelry, perfume, cosmetics, handbags etc. I'll get paid $50 for my effort, and I got to enjoy the stores too!

From there, I meandered along the car free alleys and canals of Venice for 6 hours! I logged about 5 miles and took tons of photos. I'll include minimal commentary...just scroll and enjoy!  This is "cicchetti"..small by-the-piece Italian "snacks"... best enjoyed at an osteria/wine bar.

In front of the famous Harrys Bar. On May 13, 1931, Giuseppe Cipriani Sr. opened Harry’s Bar in Venice. Over the years, it became the place where writers, painters, artists, aristocrats, kings and queens would meet. Among them there were Barbara Hutton, Katherine Hepburn, Gary Cooper, Giancarlo Menotti, Peggy Guggenheim, Orson Welles, Frank Lloyd Wright, Joe di Maggio, Truman Capote and Ernest Hemingway. The key to the success of this tiny bar was service, freedom and lack of imposition.

After walking and eating my way around Venice ALL day, I headed back to get a good night's sleep. Tomorrow, I catch a morning train to the Cinque Terre! I visited Venice at age 19, age 26 and again today, and it's still one of my favorite places in the world!
